Glowacki vs Cunningham – HIGHLIGHTS: April 16, 2016 – PBC on NBC

Krystof Glowacki defeated Steve Cunningham in a WBO Cruiserweight title fight on April 16, 2016 in Brooklyn, NY — PBC on NBC.

Steve Cunningham’s troubles with southpaws continued against 200-pound champion Krzysztof Glowacki on Saturday night at Barclays Center in Brooklyn, New York, as did his problems with Polish titleholders.

Glowacki (26-0, 16 KOs) floored twice floored Cunningham (28-8-1, 13 KOs) with second-round left hand counters, had a raised a large welt above the older man’s right eye by the seventh, and dropped him once more in the 10th-round final rounds on short right hands on the way to a unanimous decision that was tougher than the scorecards would indicate.

Glowacki won, 118-109, and 116-108 twice thanks to the four knockdowns, but often forced to hold or fight off of the ropes against a game challenger who engaged toe-to-toe throughout the night.

Glowacki, nevertheless, made a successful first defense of the championship he won in August by rising from a sixth-round knockdown to dethrone Marco Huck by 11th-round stoppage, denying Huck a record 14th straight 200-pound title defense.

A 39-year-old two-time champion in the 200-pound division who spent four years fight at heavyweight, Cunningham had hoped to recapture past glory by returning to the weight class against Glowacki, a 29-year-old whose partisan fans booed Cunningham’s introduction, chanted Glowacki’s name and made Barclays Center feel like his home country.

Cunningham rose into heavyweight in 2012 and a 4-3-1 division record, ending with a split-draw against former 175-pound champion Antonio Tarver on the same card as Glowacki-Huck at the Prudential Center in Newark, New Jersey.
