May 6th, 2006. Billed as “Danger Zone”, Oscar De La Hoya aka “The Golden Boy” takes on “El Matador” Ricardo Mayorga as Mayorga’s makes the 1st defense of his WBC Super Welterweight title. Mayorga’s prefight record was 27(22)-5-1 while Oscar was 37(29)-4.

Months leading into the fight, both were involved in a tirade of insults but mostly initiated by Mayorga with De La Hoya retaliating time after time. Both were involved in a shoving match in February of the same year during a commercial to promote their fight in California. Mayorga insulted not only The Golden Boy himself but also his wife and son, Diego De La Hoya.

In June 2004, De La Hoya scored a controversial UD victory against Felix Sturm which he won the WBO Middleweight crown. Many observers including ringside commentator Roy Jones Jr. thought Sturm was the apparent winner of the fight. With this victory, Oscar became world champion in 6 different weight divisions; Super Featherweight, Lightweight, Super Lightweight, Welterweight, Super Welterweight and Middleweight.

The Golden Boy would square off with the legendary Bernard Hopkins next in September 2004. Oscar put up a great performance but ultimately lose to the naturally bigger Hopkins. Oscar suffered his first and only real knockout loss from a Hopkins left hook to the body. From then on, De La Hoya was inactive for 20 months before facing El Matador.

Highlights of De La Hoya vs Hopkins;

In October 2004, Ricardo Mayorga fought Felix “Tito” Trinidad in an explosive encounter described by some as the “Hagler-Hearns of the 21st Century”. Mayorga was able to deck Tito and infamously stuck out his chin to take a couple of flush left hooks by Trinidad while dancing to taunt Trinidad. However, Mayorga ultimately succumbed to Trinidad’s power in Round 8 after suffering 3 knockdowns.

Highlights of Trinidad vs Mayorga;

In August 2005, Mayorga won the vacant WBC World Super Welterweight title via UD12 against Michele Piccirillo and is set to take on The Golden Boy.
