June 8th, 2013. On this day, Marcos “El Chino” Maidana fights Josesito Lopez aka “The Riverside Rocky” in an explosive action packed fight, as Maidana defends his WBA Intercontinental Welterweight Title for the first time.

Prefight records; Maidana 33(30)-3, Lopez 30(18)-5.

Lopez was a 1.95-1 underdog coming into the fight and his best win to date was an upset over Victor Ortiz in June 2013. On the other hand, the slight betting favorite Maidana (a former WBA World Super Lightweight Champion) had victories over Jesus Soto Karass, DeMarcus Corley, Victor Ortiz & Erik Morales.

In the opening round, Lopez shows desire to box carefully while Maidana wants to turn it into a slugfest. Lopez, although trying to box but somehow gets lured into trading bombs.

In the 4th frame, Maidana goes down after an accumulation of shots but it was ruled a slip as his gloves touch the canvas after losing his balance holding Lopez. The Riverside Rocky dominates this round by badly hurting Maidana to the body and slows down his work rate considerably.

Both fighters continue to trade in the 5th, but Maidana having recovered from the 4th round onslaught returns the favor by belting Lopez’s body with a string of power shots.

In the 6th stanza, Maidana finally got the upper hand over Lopez and floors him with a right hand to the chin, set up with a right to the body to deck Lopez for the 5th time in his career.

Lopez beats the count but evidently hurt; as El Chino goes for the finish with a string of unanswered punches on the ropes. Referee Lou Moret jumps in to save the defenseless Lopez from further punishment.

Overall, both fighters put up an explosive, memorable fight.

In his next fight, Marcos Maidana would upset “The Problem” Adrien Broner to bag the WBA World Welterweight Title; knocking the champion down twice en route to a UD12 win. It has become one of the most memorable beat downs in the history of the sport and the most memorable win of El Chino.
