November 23rd, 2014. Legendary former 8 weight division world champion “The Pacman” Manny Pacquiao in his 2nd reign as the WBO Welterweight champion makes the 1st title defense against “The Fighting Collegian” Chris Algieri in Macao, China.

In June 2012, Manny Pacquiao lost his WBO Welterweight strap to Timothy Bradley Jr. via a highly controversial decision; despite Pacquiao’s apparent dominance over the Desert Storm, Bradley was awarded a SD with scores of 115-113, 115-113 and 113-115. In December of the same year, Pacquiao takes on his arch rival Juan Manuel Marquez in their 4th outing. They had previously met in the ring 3 times and all 3 has been highly competitive and ended with very debatable outcomes thus Pacquiao had vowed a KO victory. In yet another highly exciting fight, Pacquiao was floored for the first time (in Round 3) in years but returned the favor 2 rounds later.

While leading in the scorecards, Pacquiao was nailed with a picture perfect Marquez signature right hand, resulting in a shocking KO loss as he was last knocked out 13 years ago. The loss led some to speculate that Pacquiao’s retirement is imminent and that he was pass his best. However, in November 2013 Pacquiao came back to score a lopsided UD victory over Brandon Rios and in April 2014 he avenged his controversial loss over Bradley in a rematch via UD.

In June 2014, Chris Algieri takes on “The Siberian Rocky” Ruslan Provodnikov for his WBO Light Welterweight strap. The Fighting Collegian suffered two knockdowns early in the fight, but came back and utilize his hand speed, footwork and boxing skills to outbox Provodnikov en route to a SD win. Algieri was rocked by Ruslan’s power shots time after time but he threw and landed more punches as a whole. It has become a very debated decision as opinions are split as to whether Ruslan’s strength of two knockdowns should have won him the fight or Algieri’s effective boxing skills and movements who also landed more punches was enough to overcome Provodnikov’s strong early lead.

Going into the fight, Algieri had a 6 pound weight advantage, 4 inch reach advantage and a 3.5 inch height advantage over Pacquiao. It is interesting to note that there’s not a single clinch till the 9th round in this fight and while Pacquiao was credited with 6 knockdowns, at least one of the knockdowns was a slip (the 1st knockdown). However, due to Pacquiao’s dominance over Algieri the outcome of the fight was not affected the least. Algieri displayed tremendous determination despite a clear loss.

Perhaps, the most interesting moment of the fight occurred in Round 9, when Tim Lane (Algieri’s trainer) explains to Max Kellerman about his game plan “to let Algieri out of the cage in Round 10 or 11 to knock Pacquiao out” and shortly after making the statement Pacquiao ironically floored his man with a powerful straight left hand shot.

Chris got up and Pacquiao immediately follows up with barrage of punches to score a 2nd knockdown in the round as Algieri took a knee as Pacquiao unleashes his barrage.
