May 17th, 1980. Marvelous Marvin Hagler takes on Mexican Middleweight champion Marcos Geraldo in a fight televised live by CBS in Las Vegas, Nevada. Going into the fight, Hagler had a record of 48(40)-2-2 while Geraldo was 50(30)-15.

The winner of this fight is set to face the winner of Minter-Antuofermo II. Minter and Antuofermo first fought in March 1980, where Minter won a questionable decision. However, when both fighters rematched 3 months later in June Minter beats Antuofermo convincingly as Vito’s corner stops the fight before the 9th round due to severe injuries to the eyes and face of Antuofermo.

In May 1979, Marcos Geraldo puts on a tremendous effort against the great Sugar Ray Leonard and troubled the quicker Leonard who weighed 153 pounds; 7 pounds lighter than Geraldo. Leonard’s speed, footwork and overall abilities enabled him to overcome Geraldo’s 4 inch height and 7 pound weight advantages. Leonard was also cut in the 5th round. However Leonard rallied to win a UD10 in a hard fought battle.

Leonard regards Geraldo to be his 4th toughest fight ever as well as the hardest puncher he’s ever faced.

In August 1979, Geraldo beats Lorenzo Benitez via TKO2 in Mexico. His next fight would be against the hard hitting John LoCicero, winning by knockout in the 10th.

His next opponent would be Marvin Hagler, to potentially earn his 1st world title shot.

In November 1979, Hagler received his 1st world title shot taking on reigning WBA and WBC Middleweight Champion Vito Antuofermo who’s making the 1st defenses of both titles. The outcome was a controversial draw as Hagler appeared to be the winner, even to referee Mills Lane who went to Hagler’s corner to congratulate him before the decision was announced. Vito retain both titles.

In February 1980, Hagler rebounds with a victory over Loucif Hamani with a vicious knockout in the 2nd round, sending the Frenchman out of the ring into the press row table.

In April 1980, Hagler was set to face Marcos Geraldo but Geraldo withdrew from the bout thus Bobby “Boogaloo” Watts became a late replacement. Hagler knock Watts down twice to win via TKO2, avenging his loss to Watts in 1976. Watts was the 1st fighter to beat Hagler professionally.

Hagler is now set to take on Geraldo, to earn another shot at the Middleweight crown.

Geraldo has a 1” and 2” reach and height advantages over Hagler which he utilizes well to trouble Marvin who could not do significant damage against the slick and tricky Geraldo but overall, Hagler landed the more meaningful punches and won more rounds. Geraldo had put up a tremendous effort and at times outboxing Hagler, despite losing.
