May 10th, 1989. Two highly skilled ring technicians; Herol “Bomber” Graham and “The Body Snatcher” Mike McCallum fights for the vacant WBA Middleweight title in one of the most amazing yet severely underrated bout. Interestingly, both fighters had suffered one loss to a common opponent; the extremely underrated and slick defensive genius, Sumbu Kalambay.

Graham and McCallum lost to Kalambay in May 1987 and March 1988 respectively. Both were outpointed in 2 highly competitive, skill-filled bouts. Both fighters would rematch Kalambay; McCallum would avenged his loss in April 1991 via a close SD in a bout where both displayed amazing wills and skills, just as their 1st encounter 4 years ago.

On the other hand, Bomber Graham in spite of a great effort was once again outpointed by Kalambay in March 1992. Graham more than gave a good account of himself in the rematch.

McCallum and Graham had prefight records of 35(31)-1 and 41(25)-1 respectively. Going into the bout, McCallum had notable victories over Milton McCrory, Julian Jackson, Luigi Minchillo, Ayub Kalule, Sean Mannion and Donald Curry while Graham had noteworthy wins over Ayub Kalule & Lindell Holmes.

Note that both McCallum and Graham were highly avoided fighters during their careers. McCallum particularly, mentioned in an interview that the Fab Four; Sugar Ray Leonard, Roberto Duran, Thomas Hearns and Marvin Hagler have allegedly avoided him he was in position to fight them.

In the 5th round, McCallum took an 8 count from the referee but none of the judges counted it as it was considered to be a slip due to spilled water in the corner and not an official knockdown. In the 8th round, Graham was deducted a point for throwing McCallum into the turnbuckle which might have been crucial in the scorecards as the verdict was an SD with scores of 117-115, 115-114 & 114-117 in favor of The Body Snatcher.

Mike McCallum considered Graham to be the most awkward fighter he’s ever fought and that “fighting Herol Graham was like fighting your worst nightmare” due to his elusive style combined with dancing and taunting. Graham on the other hand considered McCallum to be the smartest (along with Sumbu Kalambay) as well as the best overall fighter that he had fought.

Hope you guys like this highlight of one of my personal favorite fights!
