April 6th, 2014. Naoya Inoue (井上尚弥) aka “Monster” won his 1st world title on this day against Adrian Hernandez aka “El Confesor”. This was Hernandez’s 5th defense of his WBC World Light Flyweight Championship in his 2nd reign.

Prefight records; Inoue 5(4)-0, Hernandez 29(18)-2-1

Going into the fight, the more experienced Hernandez who was 2x WBC World Light Flyweight Champion had notable wins over the likes of Suriyan Satorn, Rodel Mayol, Ganigan Lopez, Erik Ramirez & Gilberto Keb Baas (2x).

On the other hand, Inoue in his 2nd year as a pro held a notable UD victory over Ryoichi Taguchi.

From the opening bell, Inoue dominated Hernandez with his destructive, efficient body to head work; breaking him down round after round with powerful pinpoint-accurate punches en route to a 6th round stoppage. While Hernandez was game, and even managed to launch his assault in a few occasions but it made no difference to the younger, more powerful 20 year old in-his-prime Inoue.

*Inoue was 4 days short of his 21st birthday in this fight.

With this win, Inoue tied with Britain’s Paul Weir for winning a world title in only the 6th professional bout. Inoue also became one of the few fighters in the history of the sport to win a world title in less than 10 fights.

Back in May 1993, Weir beat Fernando Martinez via TKO7 to win the vacant WBO World Minimumweight Championship.

The following are fighters who won a world title in less than 6 professional bouts;

3) Veeraphol Sahaprom (1995) – 4th bout
– SD12 Daorung Chuwatana (WBA World Bantamweight title)

2) Saensak Muangsurin (1975) – 3rd bout
– KO8 Perico Fernandez (WBC World Super Lightweight title)

1) Vasyl Lomachenko (2014) – 3rd bout
– MD12 Gary Russell Jr (WBO World Featherweight title)

After this win, Inoue made only 1 title defense before moving up to Super Flyweight to beat Omar Narvaez for the WBO World Super Flyweight Championship to become world champion in 2 weight classes, in only his 8th pro bout.

Inoue went on to defend his WBO crown 7 times notably against Kohei Kono, Ricardo Rodriguez & Wittawas Basapean. At present, Inoue remains undefeated with a record of 15(13)-0.
