August 17th, 2013. Russian Light Heavyweight powerhouse Sergey “Krusher” Kovalev takes on Welshman Nathan Cleverly with Cleverly’s WBO title on the line. This is the first time Kovalev fights for a world title, while Cleverly makes his 6th title defense.

It is notable that this is the first time Kovalev suffers a cut in 22 bouts and Cleverly was knocked down for the first and second times in his career.

Going into this fight, Cleverly and Kovalev were undefeated with records of 26(12)-0 and 21(19)-0-1 and rated by The Ring Magazine as the No. 2 and No. 3 Light Heavyweight contenders respectively.

Nathan Cleverly made his professional debut in July 2005 and his career went 12-0 before his first title fight in 2008, where he won the Commonwealth (British Empire) Light Heavyweight title. In 2009, he also bagged the BBBofC British Light Heavyweight title.

After 5 successful defenses of his Commonwealth (British Empire) and 1 successful defense of his BBBofC British straps, he further won the EBU (European) Light Heavyweight Championship in February 2010; winning via TKO5 over Antonio Brancalion.

In the same year, he beats Karo Murat via TKO10 to earn his first world title shot against Nadjib Mohammedi in December 2010 with the interim WBO title on the line; Cleverly won his first world title via UD12.

Between May 2011 and April 2014, Cleverly successfully defend his WBO title 5 times with wins over Aleksy Kuziemski, Tony Bellew, Tommy Karpency, Shawn Hawk and Robin Krasniqi.

Sergey Kovalev made his professional debut on July 2009, and have since built a reputation for being a tremendous puncher and earns his first title fight on July 2011, winning the vacant NABA-USA Light Heavyweight strap. His record is 16(14)-0 at this point and all 14 knockout wins were within 3 rounds or less. In December of the same year, he added the WBC-ABCO Light Heavyweight title to his collection.

Between June 2012 and June 2013, Kovalev racks up 5 more victories notably over Gabriel Campillo to earn his first world title shot against Cleverly.

After this bout, Cleverly won the vacant WBA Inter-Continental Cruiserweight title and in 2015 challenges for the WBC International Light Heavyweight title against Andrzej Fonfara; losing a highly competitive UD. This fight sets CompuBox records for most combined punches thrown and landed in a light heavyweight bout.

On October 2010, Cleverly would become light heavyweight champion for the second time by stopping Juergen Braehmer to win the WBA title.

The Krusher remains undefeated today; racking up wins over Ismayl Sillah, Cedric Agnew, Blake Caparello before facing the legendary Bernard Hopkins for the Undisputed Light Heavyweight Championship. In a stunning performance.

Kovalev floors Hopkins and continues to beat him from pillar to post en route to a wide UD victory.

Since the victory, Kovalev have defended his WBA, WBO and IBF straps four times; Jean Pascal (2x), Nadjib Mohammedi and Isaac Chilemba.

This November 2016, Kovalev is set to take on undefeated former Super Middleweight King Andre “S.O.G” Ward. This fight is a possible FOTY candidate!
