January 29th, 2005. The legendary late Arturo “Thunder” Gatti takes on the veteran Jesse James Leija aka “The Texas Tornado”. Gatti also makes the 2nd defense of his WBC Super Lightweight crown in this fight. Going into the fight, Leija and Gatti had records of 47(19)-6-2 and 38(29)-6 respectively.

Between May 2002 and June 2003, Arturo Gatti collided with Micky Ward in one of boxing’s greatest trilogies of all time. Gatti won the 2nd and 3rd bouts via UD and Ward would retire after their rubber match. With these 2 spectacular victories, Gatti once again earned the opportunity to fight for a world title. Gatti had his 1st world title shot back in 1995, scoring a UD win over Tracy Harris Patterson.

And he had 3 successful title defense including over Patterson in a rematch, Wilson Rodriguez and Gabriel Ruelas. He would be dethroned by Angel Manfredy via TKO8 in January 1998.

In February 2004, Gatti takes on Gianluca Branco for the vacant WBC World Super Lightweight Championship and beats Branco via UD to become world champion in 2 weight divisions.

In July 2004, he makes the 1st defense of his WBC strap against Canadian’s Leonard Dorin. In a fight that is expected to be FOTY material, Gatti made short work of Dorin by knocking him out with a spectacular left hook to the body at the end of the 2nd round. Dorin would retire after this loss.

The 17 year veteran Leija is set to be Gatti’s next opponent and his 3rd title defense. This would be Leija’s final bout and he would retire from the sport with a final record of 47(19)-7-2.
