March 11th, 2000. “Irish” Micky Ward takes on “The Shamrock Express” Shea Neary in an explosive fight. This is Neary’s 6th defense of his World Boxing Union Super Lightweight title.

Neary won the title by scoring a decision over Darryl Tyson in 1996, and defended it successfully against Jeremiah Malinga, Juan Carlos Ceferino Villarreal, Mike Griffith, Naas Scheepers and Andy Hooligan between 1997 to 1999.

In 2002, Micky Ward would clash with Arturo “Thunder” Gatti in a the first bout of an unforgettable trilogy that would become one of the legendary rivalries in the sport of boxing. Ward would retire in 2003 after the rubber match with Gatti.

This is the highlights of the Gatti-Ward trilogy:

Going into the fight, Ward had a record of 35-8 with 26 knockouts while Neary was still unbeaten at 22-0 with 16 knockouts. Neary was down for the very first time in his career in this bout. This bout is packed with lots of infighting action, particularly body shots were traded by both fighters at close range.
